Out Of My Mind

Draper, S. (2010).  Out of my mind. NY: Atheneum.

“I can’t talk. I can’t walk. I can’t feed myself or take myself to the bathroom.” This is a book that tells the story of a 12 year old girl  named Melody with Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral Palsy is a disorder that affects the muscles. Although most people doubt that she is able to achieve anything,   Melody’s parents never gave up and enrolled her into a regular school. Even though Melody can’t do much because of her disability, she is very smart and has a photographic memory which allows Melody to notice and remember everything. This causes Melody to feel like she is out her mind because she is not able to communicate her thoughts or feelings to anyone. The story takes us on a journey of Melody’s challenges of not being “normal” and the internal battles she has to face making her just want to give up on life. However, she learns that with supportive family, friends, and technology, she is finally able to find her voice. Out of My Mind is an award winning realistic fiction book. This is a recommended read for ages 10+ and anyone that may have a connection to a disabled person. The author adds a very significant detail of a fish in a bowl on the front cover which allows readers to connect it with the conflict in Melody’s life. After reading this book readers will learn the importance of true friendship, family, and acceptance.
